Have fun Tie Dying your own tote bag. Feel free to test this out on things like t-shirts, pillow slips, hats, etc.
What you’ll need:
3 pack Tie Dye Kit with:
- 3 coloured dye bottles
- Plastic Gloves
- 20 rubber Bands
Cotton Tote Bag
Ziploc Plastic Bag
Plus about 500ml water
You’ll also need an outfit that can get dye on it - it can spill easily.
You’ll need to be able to either go outside to use the dyes on the grass or other surface that will be ok to get messy.
Use the laundry tub without ANYTHING else in it. The dye can stain a bathtub or kitchen bench.
You can find everything you need in this tutorial in any of these kits below:
JIMI TIE DYE KIT
STEP 1: UNPACK YOUR TIE DYE KIT
You might need to get some adult help with unpacking the kit!
Get everything out of your kit - gloves, rubber bands, 3 bottles of dye and set them all aside somewhere safe being extra cautious with the dye.
STEP 2: TIE YOUR SUNBURST!
Lay your tote bag out on a flat surface. Pinch a bit of fabric right in the middle of the bag. Pull the pinched fabric through the fingers of your other hand. Tie a rubber band TIGHTLY roughly 5 cm from the pinch.
Repeat this 4 times until you have 4 bands around your tote.
STEP 3: FILL YOUR DYE BOTTLES
You will need to go outside or somewhere that you can safely spill some dye without ruining anything before you start.
Carefully unscrew the top of your bottles and fill with water to the line shown. Put the lids and caps back on tightly and SHAKE!
STEP 4: HEAD OUTSIDE TO USE THE DYE
Head outside and get your gloves on. Make sure you’re somewhere where dye can spill safely.
Choose your first colour then squeeze and pour some dye over the 1st and 4th ring on your starburst. You want a fair bit of colour but don’t over soak. Repeat the pattern with your other 2 colours.
STEP 5: PUT IN A ZIPLOCK BAG FOR 6-8 HOURS TO SET
STEP 6: REVEAL YOUR MASTERPIECE!
After the dye has set you can remove the tote from the ziploc bag and take off the rubber bands to reveal your custom tote!
Wash the bag by itself (or with your other tie dye pieces) in cold water with mild detergent. Enjoy!
